What is rosemary oil?

It is an essential oil extracted from the flowers and leaves of the rosemary plant (aka Rosmarinus officinalis). Although people confuse rosemary oil withrosemary extract, the two have notable differences. According to Iris Rubin, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of SEEN Skin & Hair Care, rosemary oil is purer and therefore more potent.. Extracts typically contain compounds from the leaves of the plant and can be combined with a carrier oil. This reduces the concentration of rosemary and reduces the possibility of causing irritation.  

What are the benefits of rosemary oil for hair?

Although rosemary oil is often hailed as an effective ingredient for promoting hair growth, these are the proven benefits supported by clinical evidence:

Can rosemary oil help grow hair?

Although scientific evidence is still limited, rosemary oil has shown promising effects on hair growth, not only in testimonials on TikTok. Both Dr. Ansell and Jessie Cheung, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, cite a 2015 study that found rosemary was comparable to the popular hair loss treatment, minoxidil (found in products such as Rogaine), at least for men struggling with genetic hair loss, which was the demographic group the study focused on. Notably, patients treated with rosemary oil experienced less scalp irritation and itching than minoxidil 2 percent, a distinguishing advantage.

How to use rosemary oil for hair growth

Since the risks of negative side effects are low, it probably won't hurt to include it in your hair care routine. After washing your hair, take five drops of rosemary oil (pure or diluted) in your hands. Massage the oil gently into your scalp while tilting your head to prevent it from dripping into your eyes. Start with every other day use and gradually increase it to daily application. Remember that some brands may recommend specific techniques, so be sure to check the instructions, either on the packaging or online.  
Patience is key: rosemary oil must be used consistently for several months before results, if any, are seen. As you can imagine, more than one bottle is needed to reap its potential benefits.

What are the potential side effects of using rosemary oil for hair growth?

The risks and side effects are minimal.. However, it is important to note that not all rosemary oils have the same concentration or potency. It is advisable to start with smaller amounts and pay attention to any signs of scalp irritation or itching.
